This day and a half seminar involves an introduction to basic photographic principles and the importance of understanding how they contribute to getting the proper exposure when photographing an image. These basic concepts include shutter speed, aperture, controlling light, and lens selection for different effects. An examination of the similarities and differences between film and digital photography will be discussed so that participants can better understand the importance of achieving the proper exposure in getting the best photographs. In these sessions participants will:

• Examine the components of digital cameras from basic point and shoot models to digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. This will help them to better understand the features of specific camera manufacturers and to navigate the menu systems proficiently.
• Gain an understanding of how custom features for specific cameras such as white light balance, exposure bracketing, resolution, quality, etc. can enhance their photographic effects.
• Be introduced to methods for storage and retrieval of images as well as basic photo editing techniques found in Photo Shop and Light Room type software programs. The final section of the seminar will focus on the computer and photo editing software as part of the digital photographic experience.

This will be a combination of lecture, demonstration, and small group hands-on participation. The seminar will be conducted through a power point presentation with specific places designated for demonstration and/or inclusion of small group practice. Participants will be encouraged to bring a digital camera, new memory card, tri pod and camera manual for the hands-on sections. They also may bring individual lap top computers loaded with photo-editing software (Photo Shop is recommended) if they wish to manipulate specific images over the seminar sessions. Time will be provided each day for questions and answers from the presenter. The seminar will provide information for various ability levels from beginners to advanced learners.
